Frank Gary Mixed Hold’em Champ at the 2008 WSOP
American Frank Gary defeated 730 opponents to take home Event 41, $1,500 Mixed Hold’em, at the 2008 World Series of Poker. The victory was worth $ 219,508 and a classic WSOP gold bracelet.
Mixed Hold’em differs from classic texas holdem rules in the sense that the betting structure is changed every blind level. First you play a round of limit Hold’em, then a round of no-limit Holdem and then you switch back again, and so on.
Gary mastered this rather unusual playing form to perfection. He came to the final table in third place, but soon showed his opponents how to win at Texas Holdem. The players busted out one by one and eventually Gary stood face to face with Jonathan Tamayo. The heads-up battle for the prestigious title was a tough one, but Gary finally managed to wear his rival down.
In the final hand, a short-stacked Tamayo moved all-in with Q-7 and Gary called with A-3. The flop came A-6-4 and gave Gary a solid lead in the hand. An 8 on the turn and a 2 on the river didn’t bring any help to Tamayo and the tournament was over.
Frank Gary thereby joins big players such as Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow Phil Galfond, David Benyamine and John Phan who already has won bracelets at the 2008 WSOP.
