As we get near the halfway point — through 27 events — here’s how the WSOP Player of the Year race is shaping up:

250 – Ville Wahlbeck
220 – Brock Parker
220 – Phil Ivey
175 – Pete “the Greek” Vilandos
160 – Steve Sung
155 – Daniel Negreanu
150 – Jeffrey Lisandro
147 – Jason Mercier
145 – Roland de Wolfe
135 – Scott Clements

Click here for the full list and point totals. Personally, I think the best bet is probably Lisandro, who has been in this spot multiple times before … and maybe Negreanu, who really wants to win … oh, and Phil Ivey, too!

    The best bet is a guy who needs to win a bracelet just to tie the current points leader? I’ll take that bet!

    Ville is a threat to hold on, as is Brock Parker. But I think you’d be a fool to bet against Phil Ivey at this point.

    The last few years there was this type of close race and then everyone at the top just stopped earning points and the race finished under a caution flag.

    That’s not totally true, Shrink, unless you define a few as two.

    I happened to follow the 2007 race pretty darn closely, and it came down to the very last event — $5k 27NL-1D w/rebuys — in which Jeff Lisandro both made the money, and Tom Schneider coulda locked it up by finishing in the money … Tom got like 13th, and Lisandro made the final table … but did not get the 5th place finish he needed to pass Tom.

    An additonal note, Ville Wahlbeck already has earned more points than Erick Lindgren did last year to win POY.

    Same point structure as last year, so it’s better results at the moment for Ville.
