As Season VII Hits Airwaves, Network Secures Rights for Season VIII

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–WPT Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ:WPTE – News) and News Corporation’s Fox Sports Network (FSN) announced today that they have officially extended the television broadcast license to include World Poker Tour® (WPT) Season VIII. The new season begins filming mid-2009 and is the latest WPT programming scheduled for FSN.
Business Wire – http://www.msn.foxsports.com . <a href=View Multimedia Gallery ...">

“The World Poker Tour has a loyal and passionate fan base that has made the WPT one of the most popular programs on FSN,” said FSN Executive Vice President George Greenberg. “We’re thrilled to be airing Season 8 and look forward to another great year of WPT championship poker.”

WPT, which films its tournaments in premier properties around North America, will create 26 one-hour episodes from Season VIII events. Under the broadcast license, FSN receives exclusive rights to air those episodes in the United States across its national sports cable network. The timeslot and schedule will be released at a later date.

FSN began airing WPT’s inaugural Season I to high ratings last year, then followed with exclusive broadcast of all-new WPT Season VII episodes, which premiere every Sunday night. FSN also airs ClubWPT.com, a television series based on WPT’s innovative subscription poker offering, www.ClubWPT.com.

“Fox Sports Net and News Corporation have far exceeded our partnership expectations and we are thrilled to continue growing our strategic relationship,” said Steven Lipscomb, WPT Founder, President and CEO. “Airing our eighth season on the nation’s prime sports network truly underscores the force behind the WPT brand and poker as a televised sport.”

WPT programming currently airs alongside other sports programming such as MLB, NHL and NBA on the FSN network, which serves as the TV home to nearly two-thirds of all teams based in the United States. FSN’s 16 owned-and-operated regional networks and its affiliated networks reach more than 80 million homes across the U.S. FSN is owned and operated by News Corporation.

Last night was allegedly the debut of season 7 of the World Poker Tour on Fox Sports Net. Since FSN is really a collection of regional networks, it airs at a variety of different times depending on what version of FSN you have in your area. Also, each tournament is broken down into two 1-hour segments instead of the two-hour blocks the programs were shown in its previous six seasons. Their press release stated that there would be a “channel finder” for people to watch their programming. Problem is, they haven’t gotten around to doing that, and they’re still linking to the Season 6 schedule on GSN. Last year, the WPT created a site for people to watch previews and get details on each week’s tournament on GSN. This year, the domain name wptonfsn.com is still available for the taking (hint, hint).

I’ve never heard of Lee Russakoff until this morning, but apparently he’s sports editor over at Comcast.net. Lee was also at the High Stakes Poker tapings at the Golden Nugget this weekend, and has 5 posts on his blog about the various goings on that should make for interesting watching when GSN starts to air High Stakes Poker on March 1.

After some speculation <s>amongst poker insiders</s> between Dan and Pauly, it seems that the bigwigs at the World Poker Tour and Full Tilt Poker were talking….just not about a buy-out. The agreement has been signed and announced to give FullTiltPoker.net the title of “exclusive educational poker sponsor” for all WPT Season 7 episodes to air on Fox Sports Net someday.

To add a little more speculation to the mix, this contractual friendship between WPT and FTP could lead to bigger and better things should the WPT Enterprises end up going private in the next few months. With the WPT having officially dropped any hopes of running its own online gaming site, with the exception of ClubWPT (that inside sources tell me is not doing well), the company could very well be entertaining the idea of partnering in a bigger way with Full Tilt in the future. Speculation only at this point…

For now, here is today’s press release:

FullTiltPoker.net is Exclusive Educational Poker Sponsor for WPT Season VII Episodes Airing on Fox Sports Net and in Mexico

LOS ANGELES, Nov 06, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — World Poker Tour(R) creator WPT Enterprises (Nasdaq:WPTE) and FullTiltPoker.net(TM) today announced a television sponsorship deal, aligning the leading powerhouses in televised and online poker. The deal–which is based on a unique sponsorship model for the sports and entertainment television industry–further boosts WPTE’s growing sponsorship business.

Under the agreement, FullTiltPoker.net(TM) receives title sponsorship and exclusive rights to in-show educational gaming brand integration for the 26 all-new WPT Season VII episodes scheduled to air on Fox Sports Net in the United States, as well as Season VII episodes that air in Mexico.

“We are delighted to be in partnership with FullTiltPoker.net(TM) and bring together two very strong brands with proven global reach and a loyal network of poker fans,” said Steve Lipscomb, WPTE founder, president and CEO. “With WPT’s incredible brand value and TV distribution through FSN coupled with FullTiltPoker.net’s massive online following, this partnership opens more channels to reach new fans and continue feeding the appetite for new poker content.”

FullTiltPoker.net(TM) is one of the leading online poker instruction sites, featuring Team Full Tilt – 13 world-renowned poker pros. Team Full Tilt is a select group of the world’s finest professional poker players, including Chris Ferguson, Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Jennifer Harman, Erick Lindgren, Erik Seidel, Andy Bloch, Phil Gordon, John Juanda, Mike Matusow, Gus Hansen, Allen Cunningham, and Patrik Antonius who have collectively won 10 WPT titles, 35 World Series of Poker bracelets and more than $80 million in career earnings.
