The Spinal Tap of Poker?
by Dan Michalski, Mar 14, 2008 | 10:52 am
I’ve long thought that poker and fiction generally don’t mix well — at least not in the modern poker era when you’ve got so much got so much comedy, drama*, and pervy shenanigans going on in real poker life. But the newest poker movie, The Grand, may be different. Not only does it have an intriguing cast — Woody Harrelson, Dennis Farina, Ray Romano, David Cross, Cheryl Hines, Richard Kind, Chris Parnell — but also it’s improvised during a real poker tourney Curb Your Enthusiasm style.
The movie opens in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York City, and Philadelphia next Friday. Click here to see the trailer … and we’ll have to see how many of you/us actually go see the film.
ALT HED: Lucky You 2?

crap I want to see it, it needs to open in dallas or go straight to dvd. Whoever is in those cities needs to go see it so it will make money and they will expand its opening to other cities

I’ll be seeing it in L.A. with high hopes… but I had high hopes for Lucky You, also. I truly hope this one is a gem!

The trailer references darts, so how can it not be good?
By the way … kinda funny to see the semi-fictional takes on the likes of Dutch Boyd, Daniel Negreanu, et al.

I would love to see it…but don’t enjoy theaters enough to go if it shows here. Will hope for a DVD or maybe Starz/Encore will pick it up some day. It looks 100% more entertaining than Lucky You.

I like how nobody has commented on the accuracy of the correct placement of the “A” on the poster. Is that a left-handed deck or something?

Too funny! I didn’t notice, but now I can’t not notice.

yeah that makes me think they had somebody make the poster that didnt know anything about cards.
although being left handed I kinda like the cards that have stuff on both sides.
Yeah straight to dvd would be ok I guess, but I would like for them to make money if the movie is good.

Or the one who designed it had to put the A on that side because he was told to do so. Sometimes being the peon designer can really suck when a higher up “knows” more than you.

If Jen had gone to see it we would have a review. Why has Jen not gone to see it?

It’s actually only playing at one theater in Los Angeles, and I didn’t have time to get over there and see it last weekend. I’m going to try to see it this weekend. 🙂

I am a little mad at their publicist for not insisting that Jen go to the opening in LA and I go to the one in LV. Um hello, didn’t they have a red carpet? How could we not be there(s)?
