Two Controversial Hands from the PCA

Here’s a couple of hands from this year’s PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas.
The most recent hand came from the final table of the World Cup of Poker VI yesterday, as 2008 November Niner Darus Suharto is the victim of one of the worst slowrolls ever. Note: As this is a team competition, players are allowed to call a time-out in the middle of the hand.
The slowrolling came back to bite the Germans, as they were eventually eliminated by Canada, but it was the team from Taiwan Chinese Taipei who took down the title.
The PCA Main Event had the other controversial hand, as Daniel Negreanu calls the floor and the forums blow up, accusing him of shooting an angle:

I don’t think Negreanu was shooting an angle. Maybe just being a bit too nitpicky, but hey.
I wish Suharto woulda punched the German guy.

I don’t think so either. Matt Savage noted in the thread, the floorperson saw it was Negreanu, froze, and made a bad ruling (post #87 in the thread).
Darus is too nice to do such a thing, but there’s plenty of people who wouldn’t hesitiate, imo.

I think anyone who thinks Negreanu was shooting an angle, Roy Winston included, is a moron or is trying to sensationalize an otherwise normal story. The possibilities of what could happen during that hand are wide and varied depending on the particular ruling body of the tournament, and when ANYONE is in doubt as to what the rule is in the situation, you should always call the floor.

It’s certainly a bit suspect…. I mean, if Negreanu is sure he saw the hand, then he’s folding to a reraise, or losing the hand… but instead, he wants to go to showdown without facing a reraise because he isn’t quite sure what he saw.
Daniel is one of the first to say the rules about exposing cards are silly, but he is also the first to call the floor here? It leaves a bad taste.

Negreanu is always shooting angles!! but this what I like this game survivor of the fittest…… or the smarter?

There’s a fine line between angle-shooting and “advantage stickling”. I think I gotta see Negreanu generally on the right side of that line; if not, I might be a dirty angle shooter myself.

Maybe…just maybe…Daniel was worried about the card he was not 100% sure he saw. I think if it was a 5 the guy had a straight but if not then he had what…2 pair? Not sure what Daniel’s hand was by the end but if he had 2 pair at least he may not want to fold to a small raise but why call the raise if you can get to see the hand for free. Assuming he was using the same thinking that you use when someone “may” have seen a card.
I have had card sorta show but I was not 100% positive what I saw. I say “I think it was a 4 or 5 of diamonds.” and they expose the card for all to see and it was a 6 of hearts. Why should they keep the card in play and those that may have seen it get screwed because they really were not sure what they saw.
Or they could have just punched him in the face and told him to write another book.
(Thought I would visit once more before the daughter is born and takes me away from everything that has to do with poker.)

Very exciting, Ed. Congrats on the working sperm!
(I think this makes you slightly less gay than Negreanu.)

Yes it does…because my wife is not a beard. 😛
