All the Rage or Passing Fancy?

(Sigh.) Rough WSOP … Jason Mercier and I have so much in common.

With the WSOP and ancillary summertime Las Vegas tournament action coming to a close, Dave has already exchanged his WSOP victory flatscreen for a $400 Target gift card; Andrew finishes with a win at the newly opened LVH poker room, er … poker area; and was Dan even at the World Series of Poker in 2013? Meanwhile, Nevada’s only currently live legal online poker option is seeking feedback about bonus programs and deposit incentives … and who’s in for $125 Open-face Chinese at the Palms? The VG radio fellas are here … to give it all a little thought, and maybe some lip, yo.

55 Plausibly Pokery License Plates Seen at or near the Rio this WSOP

by , Jul 10, 2013 | 10:00 am

Here’s a glimpse of who’s been driving around the Rio this summer. Some are obvious poker players (or poker workers) while other vanity plates might leave you guessing about any such connection … but regardless, you have no idea how much info you can glean from peering into private vehicles this small sampling of what was on display this summer tells you a little something about who’s in town ready to play. Overall, not too many corny poker phrases, but we do see a lotta 8s, a little bit of religion, some sports, and boy, those handicapped people sure do drive nice cars …

37 WSOP Tournament Vines

by , Jul 9, 2013 | 3:38 am

Poker tournament coverage is often on the cutting edge with regular use of new media technologies — falling somewhere behind porn and still ahead of the mainstream — and today the Vine app seems to be all the rage … or at least will have been for about 6 seconds.

I’m not sure yet if these video snippets are the next Instagram, the next Draw Something, or video Pinterest … but whatever it is, there’s more and more #WSOP on Vine by the day (despite WSOP/ESPN no-video policies that are like sooo 2011-12). It seems early adopters are still trying to figure out what exactly makes for a good, um, vine, but view these moving squares all together (and turn on the volume for some) and you’ll get a sense of the WSOPatchwork — as seen in quick video loops of chip porn, hallway meet-n-greets, WSOP worker vids, tableside commentary from a world-class DJ, and even a marriage proposal that, well, er … see for yourself … over and over and over and over again, until you’re done forever …

Life is about to get more complicated for Caesars Interactive Entertainment CEO Mitch Garber.

He wouldn’t have it any other way. With the World Series of Poker nearing the end of its six-week run at the Rio, Garber’s attention will focus on launching the tournament’s pay-to-play regulated online gaming website in Nevada.

Caesars Interactive — a Montreal-based subsidiary of casino operator Caesars Entertainment Corp. — is also moving forward with online gaming prospects in New Jersey. The casino operator owns one-fourth of the Atlantic City gaming market.

Garber’s division also handles Playtika, Caesars expanding free-play social gaming operation.

Meanwhile, Garber’s duties will soon include CEO of Caesars Growth Partners, an entity created by Caesars Entertainment as a growth oriented business.

Anything else?

Deep Stacked, High Stakes Cash, Banished Drunkards + Bonus Wear

CAPTION HERE if you’re not willing to back me.

In this week’s episode, er, I mean last week’s … Andrew embarks on the Las Vegas Strip low-stakes Summer circuit (Rio, Venetian, Caesars Palace, Bellagio, Aria, Wynn …) only to make a valiant 0-fer run, leaving us time to discuss a caravan of high-stakes cash games sprouting up around town — it’s open-face Chinese blossoming at the Rio, Doyle popping up at the Venetian, and Doyle doing his best Deadmau5 in the Ivey Room. Meanwhile Dave takes a look at the Carnevale of Poker and the fields it draws, and we all get a chuckle out of getting so drunk at the Carnival Court that you’re banned forever from the WSOP. (Surely no one will get that drunk at the premiere party for the online poker documentary Bet Raise Fold, right?) All that and some patch bonuses available for those willing to pimp for WSOP.com, Ultimate Poker, and/or those crazy kinds at QuadJacks.

Exciting (Limit) Poker WTF?

by , | 1:44 am

I swear Tom Schneider is really starting to piss me off. He knows full well I have little intention of trying to cover the WSOP this year … but damnit, I came up with that strategy kinda-sorta counting on a lackluster performance by our longtime Team Pokerati ambassador — a near certain result as per performance indicators over the past four or so years! But now, like right now, he’s well on his way to taking down trying hard to take down his second bracelet and/or 6-figure score.

With now only five players left, I’m fairly certain he’s gonna win this one, the way he’s barreling through this final table … Greg Mueller, I’d say, is his only threat, as I’ve seen him beat Tom heads-up before with a lot on the line.

You can watch the WSOP live stream here:

Though I don’t know the WSOP statistical lore on this one, it would be a rather amazing feat to win a $1,500 HORSE event, and then the $5,000 HORSE, no? And not to get ahead of anyone, but a repeat POY maybe? OK, I’ll cut with the jinxing as Schneider-Mueller have dropped from 1st/2nd in chips to 3rd/4th with four left in the time it has taken me to write this paragraf.

But the important thing to notice, no matter how this event plays out, is that Tom’s hat (Loudmouth Poker, $25) plays well for the live stream:

UPDATE: Now Tom is short, and FBT is chip leader … while the hat tells pretty much the whole story.

UPDATE: Back and forth back and forth … Tom is dominant chip leader now, with hat, um, re-unreversed?

UPDATE: Final four coming back on Tuesday, with Tom in strong position.

Seat Player Chip Count
1 Greg Mueller 140,000
4 Viatcheslav Ortynsiky 680,000
6 Tom Schneider 2,500,000
7 Benjamin Scholl 600,000

11 Stories You Should Know if You’re Just Getting into the WSOP

by , Jun 15, 2013 | 4:52 pm

Maybe you’re kinda like me (or not) and just getting into the 2013 Stanley Cup World Series of Poker? It’s a long haul, sure, but know the basics of these stories and you can feel confident about having a pretty good grasp on how the deal has gone down at the WSOP this summer, and at least won’t sound like a total poker dunce while hosting your next weekly homegame and/or podcast.

Whoop-whoop all PokerNews-er-ati! Suck it dealers and floor staff! With Chad’s $85k win in Event #1 comes a) proof that just a few years in poker media can make a clean-cut golden boy look disheveled and scruffy … and b) inspiration for many wearing a badge to think that maybe we shouldn’t give up our on-the-felt dreams just quite yet.
