‘Non-Terrible’ Poker Video-Game Alert

by , Jul 18, 2012 | 3:21 am

This one goes out to all high functioning poker nerds. Please note, that if you liked at least one episode of Game of Thrones then I’m going to include you in this category. Anyone who gets all aquiver at the thought of knights whacking each other with pointy metal is on the geek team, trust me. You might as well put a down payment on that Star Trek boxset right now and embrace your new found freedom.

Now that you’re suitably unshackled from societies strictures we can talk about this video game I found: Runespell: Overture.

First off, it’s a poker video game which isn’t awful, so that’s already a big tick in the plus column. Second it’s got collectable power cards, a guy in a hood who doesn’t remember stuff, and quests. Piles of glorious quests.

What makes it distinctly worthwhile for us poker folk is that forming 5-card hands is the primary battle mechanic. Both you and your monstrous opponents get a solitaire stack of playing cards to reorganize. You can shuffle these around at will or steal unused cards from your opponent. The better the hand you form the stronger your attacks will be.

I’ve sunk a few hours into it and while it’s nothing spectacular, it’s definitely worth a look. The fact that it’s currently on sale for £2.71 (~$4) on Steam made it a no-brainer, especially considering what an amazing cross-section of my interests it is. Hopefully some of you fine people will feel the same way. At the very least, it should fill a few hours of post-WSOP void.
