ESPN Gets Emmy Nomination for November Nine?

News to me … but that’s what ESPN dude Doug White (Sr. Director of Programming and Acquisitions) said on the WSOP Conference Call. They got it for live event coverage. Woot, congrats — go poker! But really? Did they see the blurriness in the background? And did they know how terribly the heads-up was handled? And did they realize it wasn’t “live” live? OK, sorry, not to throw the ESPN dudes under the Emmy bus … but really, they can’t win for 2008, can they?

Yet with an extra year to fine-tune, it’s gotta be pretty good that they know they have something to shoot for this year. Poker winning an Emmy would definitely be a big deal.

UPDATE: Apparently the Sports Emmys were last night. Trying to find a list of nominees and who won … but no luck so far.

    Damn! I am with Dan, how can fishing not win this one? I mean 95% of the action takes place below the water out of view of the audience. Oh wait, there are basshole cams!?? I stand corrected.

    Dude, there totally are cams on the hooks under the water! That’s what made me think it was gonna catch on … when you could actually see the fish considering different lures and such.

    Seeing those poor fishies go after that HUGE hook and reeled out of their element, is just too hard for me to watch!

    How can those guys be so cruel? They should spend all that money they put into their custom boats and rods,reels and lures at the Poker Tables instead!:)

    i think you hit the nail on the head, scott … catch-and-release may not mean much if you see a shard of metal and related blood as the fish gets hooked and some hick-accented dudes on the boat either celebrate or lament.
