Youngest Final Table Ever?

Gen Y domination

Surely it’s got to be, right? And maybe not just for main events … I wouldn’t be surprised if this represents the youngest final table ever — for any WSOP event in history! One of the youngest five, for sure, I’ll virtually guarantee.

Eight 20somethings and one Gen-Xer (who happens to be the second shortest stack):

FILIPPO CANDIO – 26
JOSEPH CHEONG – 24
JOHN DOLAN – 24
JONATHAN DUHAMEL – 22
MATTHEW JARVIS – 25
MICHAEL MIZRACHI – 29
CUONG “SOI” NGUYEN – 37
JOHN RACENER – 24
JASON SENTI – 25

It seems the most prescient pre-game analysis might have come from a non-poker media source … specifically Time Magazine’s Dan Kadlec, whose article (“World Series of Poker: Attack of the Math Brats“, 28 June 2010) is now up online for those of you who didn’t get to read it in full when it first came out.

The November Nine Class of ’10 includes only two players who were 21 or older when Chris Moneymaker did his thing at age 27.

Amazing and not at all surprising at the same time, given the level of competition and the endurance required.

Definitely the youngest WSOP ME final table.

The $1,500 NL that Simon Watt won and Tom Dwan finished 2nd had an average age of 24.8

The 2009 $5,000 NL Holdem Shootout (which was 5-handed) had an average age of 22.2*

    * Credit goes to Jess Welman, as this had been discussed on Twitter during the $1,500 NL.

I was there the whole time and I have to say I have sweated a few friends the past 4 years at the WSOP and other majors. I enjoy watching and they have always supported me. I took the drive to Vegas because I promised Mike if he made the final 27 I would be there. Kept my word and was very very impressed with the paly of these guys. This had to of been the best 27 final players I have evered watched. I cannot wait to see some of the hands on TV in 2 weeks. I know thet wont show them all but there was some poker being played yesterday.

    CONGRATULATIONS GRINDER

Just did the math for this one … the average age here is 26.2.

Can we call it the youngest $10k or bigger final table ever?

BTW, looking at this stat, I am starting to rethink my opposition to BJs definitions of “final” for a final table. By adhering to the definitions I was insisting on, this final table may or may not have to include Brandon Steven, the 10th place finisher, who is age 36.
