PokerStars Reveals First EPT Stops for 2025, Cancels Paris Event
Prague Festival Wraps Up Another Successful EPT Season
No Such Thing as Too Much Action: Eureka Main Breaks Records Again
One of the biggest and most popular poker tours in the world, the European Poker Tour, first started during the golden era of poker in 2004.
The expansion of live poker that happened in the early 2000s included the EPT, a Tour started by Jon Duthie, a professional poker player and the winner of the first-ever Poker Million event played on the Isle of Man.
The popularity of EPT was greatly assisted by the increased popularity of Texas Hold’em Poker as a game in the years after it was founded, which eventually led to thousands of players looking for a way to play in the EPT events.
In 2011, EPT’s popularity led to the organization’s acquisition by PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker operator at the time. EPT remains under PokerStars’ ownership to this day and is the operator’s flagship live poker series in Europe.
Over the years, EPT has been played in many major European locations and even some locations beyond European soil. If you are looking to join the tour this year, check out the schedule below to find out which upcoming stops of EPT you can play at.
European Poker Tour (EPT) 2025 Schedule:
Name | Date | Buy-in |
EPT Monte Carlo | April 30 – May 10 | €5,300 |
EPT Barcelona | August 18 – September 31 | €5,300 |
History of the European Poker Tour (EPT)
The history of the European Poker Tour (EPT) is a long and exciting one, dating back to 2004 when professional poker player John Duthie had the vision to create a poker tour on European soil to dodge the likes of WPT and WSOP.
The first Season of EPT started in the fall of 2004 and featured seven events spread across seven months.
The Tour grew rapidly in popularity and reach, and by Season 7 in 2010, it had as many as 13 stops across the continent (one stop in the Caribbean).
In 2011, PokerStars purchased the EPT brand, which increased its exposure and popularity among live and online poker players.
Over the years, many of the poker world’s best players and personalities have been involved with producing the EPT television broadcasts, which have recently been shown live via PokerStars and EPT live streaming channels on platforms like YouTube.
The likes of Daniel Negreanu, Greg Raymer, and Victoria Coren all gave their expert analysis for the show over the seasons, while presenters like Kara Scott, Kristy Arnett, Sarah Grant, and Lynn Gilmartin all acted as the show’s hosts over its 18 seasons.
Key Events in EPT History
The history of EPT is too long to cover entirely on a single page, but some events stand out in that history and have shaped the Tour into what it is today.
To help understand the significance of EPT for the game of poker, we have compiled some of those key moments right here, ranging from big names breaking onto the poker scenes to major events on and off the tables of the EPT.
Other notable tours:
2004 – Stevic and Hollink Mark Season 1
European Poker Tour Season 1 was an experiment, and no one could really tell if it would work out or be a complete flop.
The first event rolled out in Barcelona on September 4, 2004, and attracted 229 players, a significant number for the time.
Swedish player Alexander Stevic was crowned the first-ever EPT champion and would later come close to repeating this success at EPT Monte Carlo, where he came third.
The Season culminated in the EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final event, which was won by Rob Hollink, who remains an active member of the poker community to this day.
Hollink won €635,000 for his achievement, but more importantly, he made a place for himself in the poker history books as the first EPT Grand Final champion in the history of a Tour that would grow to become one of the greatest phenomena in the poker world.
2005 – Patrik Antonius Wins an EPT Trophy
Patrik Antonius may be one of the greatest poker players in the world today, but back in 2005, he was an up-and-coming prodigy from Finland with a lot to prove.
It didn’t take long for Antonius to leave a mark on the EPT, as he walked away with his first EPT trophy at EPT Baden, where he defeated a field of 180 players.
The €288,180 first-place prize did not leave a significant impact on Antonius’ lifetime bankroll, but it partially set him on a path he would continue walking for the next two decades.
Antonius has come a long way since being crowned EPT Baden champion back in 2005, but he will always remember those days quite fondly.
2008 – PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Moves to EPT
PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) is one of the most popular poker events in the world and one with a long history.
The event was first launched in 2004 as part of the WPT, but the massive popularity of EPT combined with other factors led to PCA becoming part of the EPT in 2008.
Since then, PCA has been an integral part of the EPT, although PokerStars used it as the launching event for the NAPT in 2010 and a part of the PokerStars Championship in 2017.
Yet, PCA has remained an integral part of the EPT for the most part since 2008 and has been one of the most attended EPT events in most years.
The PCA was played at the Atlantis Paradise Island for many seasons before recently being moved to the Baha Mar Resort in the Bahamas, where it has been played recently.
2010 – EPT Berlin Gets Robbed
In 2010, there was an unanticipated event during the EPT Berlin when four masked gunmen stormed the premises and robbed it.
The robbery was partially successful, as the robbers got away with some €250,000 in cash from the cage.
No serious injuries or fatalities were recorded during the event, although a serious panic engulfed the poker room during the robbery.
The robbers were apprehended several days after the robbery and subsequently sentenced to three years in prison, while the EPT event itself continued with Kevin MacPhee eventually walking away a winner with €1,000,000 in his pocket.
2014 – Victoria Coren Achieves the Double
Winning an EPT title is an incredible feat, but doing so twice is something only three players have ever managed to do, and Victoria Coren was the first of them.
Victoria Coren, commonly known as Vicky, won her first EPT title during Season 3 at EPT London on home turf.
That time around, Vicky defeated a fairly big field of 398 players and took home a prize of €500,000, which would be quite significant even if won these days.
To make her EPT resume even more impressive, Coren won another EPT Main Event in 2014, when she won EPT Sanremo, besting 556 players for a prize of €476,100.
Those two scores alone put Vicky’s lifetime EPT earnings to close to a cool million Euros, good for nearly half of her tournament winnings.
Since then, only two players have been able to repeat Vicky’s feat: Belarus Mikalai Pobal and Canadian Mike Watson, both of whom have achieved great poker careers in their own right.
2017 – EPT Gets Rebranded
In 2017, PokerStars seemingly wanted to move away from the EPT brand and create a new tournament tour that would be focused even more on the PokerStars brand.
Dubbed the PokerStars Championship, the new tour featured events in the Bahamas, Panama, Macau, Monte Carlo, Sochi, Barcelona, and Prague.
The PokerStars Championship looked to recreate some of the most successful EPT events, like Barcelona and Prague while also creating new stops on other continents.
Yet, it only lasted a single season, and in 2018, PokerStars brought back the EPT with five stops, including the PCA.
2020 – EPT Gets Suspended During the Pandemic
The global COVID-19 pandemic, which engulfed the world in 2020, was one of the most significant events in recent history, and it impacted all spheres of life.
Live poker was hit quite badly by the pandemic, with live events on most continents and in most countries suspended for the better part of two years.
In 2020 and 2021, all EPT events apart from EPT Sochi, which was played twice during the pandemic, were suspended.
To make sure players don’t forget about EPT altogether, PokerStars did throw the inaugural EPT Online festival in November 2020.
The festival featured a $5,200 Main Event and several High Roller events, as well as several side events. A player under the screen name “WhatIfGod” walked away with a $1,019,082 first-place prize, demonstrating that poker was alive and well and just waiting for the big return that came in 2022.
2024 – Barny Boatman Becomes the Oldest EPT Main Event Winner
Barny Boatman is one of the legends of the game, and although he’s been around for a long time, it seems Boatman is not thinking about retiring any time soon.
If anyone had any doubts, Boatman took care of them in February of 2024, taking down the EPT Paris Main Event!
He masterfully navigated the field of over 1,700 players to come out on top, earning another prestigious trophy to add to his collection and €1.3 million in cash for his troubles.
Full List of EPT Champions

The long history of EPT has led to some interesting records and stats, with many of the world’s best tournament poker players getting their names in the EPT record books. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting figures created across nearly two dozen seasons of Europe’s most popular poker tour.
EPT has existed since 2004, and between one and 13 events have been played every year since, leading to quite a few players capturing an EPT trophy.
However, very few players have managed to win an EPT Main Event more than once, although quite a few have won numerous EPT side events over the years.
Yet, it is only EPT Main Event trophies that truly count towards a player’s legacy, which is why only three players can be named on the list of repeat EPT champions.
Player | Nationality | Number of Trophies | Years Won |
Victoria Coren | Great Britain | 2 | 2006, 2014 |
Mikalai Pobal | Canada | 2 | 2012, 2019 |
Mike Watson | Belarus | 2 | 2016, 2023 |
Largest EPTs by Attendance
The EPT fields have grown almost consistently over the years, with a few stops capturing the players’ imaginations more than others.
Barcelona and the Caribbean have historically had the most allure, bringing in well over 1,000 players regularly.
On the other hand, there have been EPT venues over the years that have not had as much success, with EPT festivals in some of those discontinued altogether.
The six most attended EPT Main Events in the history of the Tour have all been played in Barcelona, while the inaugural EPT Paris, played in 2023, holds the seventh place ahead of two iterations of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA).
Here is a quick look at the top five EPT events with the biggest fields and their exact attendance:
EPT Event | Year | Attendance | First Place Prize |
EPT Barcelona | 2022 | 2,294 | €1,491,133 |
EPT Barcelona | 2023 | 2,120 | €1,134,375 |
EPT Barcelona | 2019 | 1,988 | €1,290,166 |
EPT Barcelona | 2024 | 1,975 | €1,290,386 |
EPT Barcelona | 2018 | 1,931 | €1,037,109 |
