Originally founded in 2016 by Paul Phua and Richard Yong, a pair of Asian businessmen with a profound love for poker, Triton Poker Series is one of the most influential poker tours in the world.
Specializing in high-stakes poker only, the Triton Poker Series is perhaps the most elite competition in poker. It brings the very best players together to play tournament poker in some of the most luxurious destinations in the world.
Jeju, Monte Carlo, London, Madrid, Budva, Rozvadov, and Kyernia are only a few of the many destinations that the Triton Poker Series has visited to date, paying out hundreds of millions in prize money over the years.
Triton Poker Series continues this year with an extensive list of festivals, offering the best players in the world and wealthy recreational players a chance to compete at the highest levels with significant prizes on the line.
History of Triton Poker Series
Unlike many other poker tours, such as the WSOP or WPT, the Triton Poker Series has a short history similar to PGT.
The Series started in 2016 but only turned into a regular poker tour in 2019 when Triton festivals started to be played regularly and with multiple tournaments at every stop.
The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 stopped the Triton Poker Series, along with most other live poker events, slowing down the progress.
Yet, in its very short existence, the Triton Poker Series has built up quite a renown, as many of the world’s best players choose to play almost exclusively in Triton events.
Players like Jason Koon, Tom Dwan, and Phil Ivey are only a few of the internationally acclaimed poker superstars who call Triton Poker their home.
The vision to create an elite poker competition slowly became a reality as the series expanded to new venues, added more events, and brought together a number of A-list poker players to represent Triton Poker at every turn.
Today, the Triton Poker Series is a poker tour that defines success and failure for many of the world’s high-stakes poker players and is one of the most successful poker projects in the world.
We look at some of the moments that defined the history of the Triton Poker Series and made it what it is today.
2016 – Fedor Holz Wins the Inaugural Event
Fedor Holz was just 22 years old in 2016, and it was already clear that he would become a star in the poker world.
Holz played in the inaugural Triton Poker Series event, dubbed the Cali Cup, and took down the top prize of just over $3,000,000 after defeating a star-studded final table that included Phil Ivey, Steve O’Dwyer, and David Peters.
While this win was just one of many in Holz’s incredible poker career, the massive attendance of poker superstars paved the way for future Triton events and showed the world that the new Series meant business.
The $200k buyin event drew in 52 players, including many of the world’s top players, as well as a number of successful businessmen who were there to have fun and compete with the best.
2017 – Triton Series Comes to Europe
Before the Triton Poker Series was a major poker tour played in places like Monte Carlo and London, the Series made its European debut in Budva, Montenegro.
The first events in Budva took place in 2017, and the organizers repeated the festival in 2018. Holz, Ivey, and Koon flew to Montenegro to play high-stakes poker and enjoy the charms of the small Adriatic country.
The Budva festivals were the first to be played outside of Asia, and they demonstrated that the Triton Poker Series would have success anywhere, as the players flying out to play for millions of dollars would not care about the expenses of travel or accommodations.
Following the success of the Budva Triton festivals, the Series expanded its reach and has since been played in Cyprus, Spain, England, Russia, and more to become a serious competition for EPT.
2018 – Short Deck Poker Makes Its Debut
If you have watched Triton Poker Series events in the past, you have probably noticed that several events at every festival are played at Short Deck tables.
Short Deck Poker was not always around, but it made its official tournament debut at the 2018 Budva Triton Series, where a couple of Short Deck events were played.
The Asian high rollers invented the game itself, which allowed many recreational players to enjoy poker more by adding more variance and allowing them to compete on an equal footing with professional players.
Since then, a Short Deck Main Event and a Hold ’em Main Event have been played at every Triton stop, making the Series the only one with such a strong focus on Short Deck Poker.
2019 – Triton Million Played for Charity
The number of Triton Poker events seems to be growing every year, but to this day, the Triton Million for Charity, which was played during the 2019 London festival, remains the biggest buyin tournament in the history of the game.
Carrying a buyin of £1,050,000, the Triton Million attracted an incredible 54 players, allowing it to pay a top prize of £16,775,820, one of the largest tournament poker prizes ever.
Aaron Zang eventually won the event, defeating Brynn Kenney in the heads-up battle, but Kenney took the biggest prize following a heads-up deal.
The likes of Bill Perkins, Dan Smith, and Stephen Chidwick all made the final table of this extravaganza as well, as Triton introduced a model in which every professional player had to be invited by a participating recreational player.
This new model made the event both entertaining to watch and lucrative for the pros who would get a chance to play against a comparatively weaker field but with millions of pounds on the line.
2022 – Ivan Leow POY Title Introduced
The first full season of Triton Poker Series was played in 2022, following the end of the pandemic and the return of live poker.
Just as the poker community was getting invested in the Series, a tragedy caused the Kyrenia festival to halt.
While the $50,000 Short Deck event was still happening, one of the co-founding members and a big part of the Triton Poker Series community passed away at the age of 41.
Deeply grieved by his sudden passing, Phua and Yong decided to scrap the remaining two events of the festival and suspend play in the current event, distributing prize money via an ICM chop.
To honor their friend and colleague, Triton Poker Series introduced a Player of the Year system in Season 2, which is named after Ivan Leow.
Jason Koon got the honor of being named the first Ivan Leow Player of the Year in Season 2, and the title will be bestowed on the most successful player in every season of the Series.
Full List of Triton Poker Series Champions
Triton Poker Series started with just a handful of individual tournaments played in 2016 and has since exploded to include multiple yearly festivals with upwards of 10 high-stakes events at each stop.

Triton Poker Series Player of the Year
The Triton Poker Series Player of the Year (POY) title was introduced at the start of Season 2, which officially kicked off with the Madrid festival in May 2022.
Following the passing of Ivan Leow, a regular on the Triton Poker Series and its co-founder, Paul Phua and Richard Yong named the POY title by their colleague, the Ivan Leow Player of the Year.
Since Season 2, the POY title has been awarded to the most successful player of the year, with an intricate formula used to determine individual success, which considers participation, ITM finishes, final placement, buyin, and number of participants.
For each Triton event, the following points are awarded for final placement:
Position | Points |
1st | 100 |
2nd | 80 |
3rd | 60 |
4th | 40 |
5th | 20 |
6th | 10 |
7th | 6 |
8th | 3 |
9th | 2 |
10 – 12th | 1 |
The following additional points are awarded for participation:
Category | Points |
Entry on Time | 2 |
Entry | 3 |
Re-Entry | 3 |
ITM Finish | 10 |
Player of the Festival | 100 |
Furthermore, all points accumulated in a single event are multiplied by a buyin and field size multiplier, as follows:
Buyin | Multiplier | Field Size | Multiplier |
10k to 25k | 1x | 20 to 30 | 1x |
26k to 50k | 1.2x | 31 to 40 | 1.1x |
51k to 75k | 1.4x | 41 to 50 | 1.2x |
76k to 100k | 1.6x | 51 to 60 | 1.4x |
101k to 150k | 1.8x | 61 to 70 | 1.6x |
150k+ and Main Events | 2x | 71 to 80 | 1.8x |
81 to 90 | 2x | ||
91 to 100 | 2.2x | ||
101 to 110 | 2.4x | ||
111 to 120 | 2.6x | ||

Key Triton Poker Series Stats & Numbers
The Triton Poker Series has quickly become one of the most prestigious poker tours out there wiith engaging streams and for a good reason.
Featuring solely high stakes buyin events, the Series has quickly shattered many of the longest-standing records out there, ramping up numbers with each passing season.
Triton Poker events feature relatively small playing fields stacked with the world’s best players, making them some of the toughest but also most rewarding to beat.
Let’s take a look at some of the stats and figures related to the Triton Poker Series to date and its continued success over the seasons.
Record Number of Triton Poker Titles
Winning a Triton Poker Series title puts a player into a special category of high rollers who have won at one of the world’s most prestigious tours.
However, many players have won a single title thanks to the limited size of Triton Poker tournament fields. Winning multiple titles, on the other hand, is a much more difficult feat.
Above all others, Jason Koon stands as the Series’ most decorated player, with as many as 10 titles to his name, with the first one won back in 2018.
Players like Phil Ivey, Danny Tang, and Mikita Badziakouski are all in the lite club of multiple trophy winners, so here is a look at the most decorated Triton Poker Series players of all time:

Biggest Triton Poker Earners of All Time
Winning a Triton trophy is a big honor, but poker players usually prefer winning money to trophies, and a few Triton regulars have done a great job of amassing millions in winnings, even with a modest number of titles to their name.
Bryn Kenney, who famously came second but won the most money in the world’s first £1,050,000 tournament, sits at the top of the list of Triton’s top earners, with Jason Koon with his 10 titles following in second place.
