Layla Released from WPT Duties: Did Anyone See This Coming?

by , May 12, 2008 | 7:08 pm

Well, well, well. It’s the end of another WPT season, and the end of another hostess. Layla Kayleigh and her British accent have been sent packing. Wicked Chops first broke the story today that Layla would not be returning for Season VII of the World Poker Tour.

Pokerati has obtained a statement from the WPT:

Layla Kayleigh brought great edge, wit, and personality to the World Poker Tour as hostess in Season VI, and we sincerely wish her well as she continues to explore her TV career. We are currently casting for the Season VII TV hostess role, and look forward to introducing her to everyone soon.

That confirms it but leaves much to speculation, such as whose decision it was and what prompted it. A reputable source noted earlier in the season that Kimberly Lansing, the WPT video hostess, was a little perturbed about having to share camera time…

There was at least one person who predicted that one of the ladies would be gone by the end of the season. That would be yours truly. So much for my image as a bad prop bettor, huh?

My prediction was as follows:

Maybe it’s my catty intuition, but I’m thinking that they’re stepping on each other’s territory. The WPT doesn’t need two hostesses, and they don’t need ANY hostesses who are out of control. (Remember Courtney Friel?) Anyone want to lay odds on whether one or both of them will be let go by the end of the season?

Honestly, though, is anyone really surprised by the ousting of Layla?

yeah i didnt see it lasting. she just didnt do it for me. maybe the WPT folk need to make a reality tv show called “Who Wants To Be The Next WPT Hostess”! I might actually watch that reality show.

Seems like everyone just has one season. Certainly, Kimberley

seems to have had a good six months publicity wise.

What are her odds on stepping up?

    Hot Tranny Mess? Out!

Is it so hard to find someone with looks AND personality? Wait, don’t answer that….

Courtney Friel got a more suitable gig for her past experience, as weekend newsreader on FOX News Channel, after she left WPT.

  5. Poker on TV

Layla posted on her MySpace page that she was asked to return but turned them down.

G4 seems to be a clearly better option for her — or at least a better stepping stone. Not only does that keep her in the eyes of young geeks as opposed to old men, but this network is so clearly the new MTV, while the WPT is, dare I say it, a sinking ship?

Oliver, Courtney Friel at FOX News has been one of the most ridiculed “news” people in the biz because of her frequent bloopers and complete ignorance about the actual news she is reporting on. Sometimes, a pretty face just isn’t enough, but the poker shows looking for hot hostesses don’t seem to realize that.

Poker on TV, yes, Layla did leave of her own accord – that’s what she says. But no one knows what goes on behind closed doors. If she was made to feel unwelcome by someone, of course she would move on. Just saying that is a possibility.

Dan, we’ll find out if the WPT is a sinking ship in about 2 weeks. I think Oliver said that the WPT contract with GSN is due to be renewed – or not – on June 3.
