Poker Player Ernie Scherer III Arrested on Murder Warrant
As a follow up to the story from nearly a year ago, there has been an arrest in the murders of Ernest Scherer Jr. and wife Charlene Abendroth. Ernest Scherer III – their son – was arrested on a murder warrant in Las Vegas last night.
Father and son were reported to be professional poker players.
Damn. My thoughts go out to a family who has had more than its share of bad beats in the past year.
The Contra Costa Times of the Bay Area reported:
Ernie Scherer III is in custody at a Las Vegas jail on a murder warrant. A representative with the Clark County Detention Center said he is being held without bail on a fugitive charge out of Alameda County.
Acquaintances of Scherer said the professional poker player was arrested Monday evening on suspicion of killing his parents, Ernie Scherer Jr., 60, and Charlene Abendroth, 57, who were found dead in their Castlewood Country Club home March 14.

I am going to wait for BJ on the “What is and What is not poker news” discussion. Followed by the “If its bad for poker should we report on it” side discussion.

It is definitely “bad for poker” when two players are offed and one is sent to prison. Less money in the poker general fund.

In the “Is it bad for poker” category, I was thinking more about all the rosy articles and predictions I read from various poker media. Why not just go with the facts, like the economy sucks and less people are spending money on everything from yachts and vacations to, yes we can say it, poker.

I read this article on the foxnews site acouple of days ago were the headline was in bold print “Professional Poker player charged in double murder”. After reading the article, it mentioned he was a real estate investor and a recreational poker player.
If there is any subliminal message in this article its in the headline. I would consider myself a recreational reader and follower of poker tv programming, so if this guy is a major poker player it would be a bad thing for poker. However, since he’s not what I would think of “sponsored” poker player. Personally, if the headline read “Real Estate Investor charged in double murder” I would of skipped the article.

Jason B.: It was the murdered father (Ernie Jr.) who was the real estate investor. The son (Ernie III) is (was?) a professional poker player and is the person who was charged with the double murder. It’s a little confusing because of their names.

Bad news for Poker when the news agency flash this without mentioning his other line of work.

They are looking for a Twitter Trending headline. That goes back to the old days of “Yellow Journalism”.
Hope they choke on it.
